- To anyone who knows faxmodems, or the USR Sportster VI. I have a
- problem that I can't figure out.
-
- U.S. Robotics will not respond to my email and fax requests for help
- (except for an automated response saying they will get back to me).
- Attached is a copy of my last email to U.S. Robotics with info.
-
- By the way, SmithMicro (the software vendor) will not help at all!
-
- If anone can give me a word or two of advice, I would appreciate it.
- I am going to take Friday off to tackle this thing once again!

- USR Support Staff:
-
- Sould someone please call me? I have sent three emails and one fax,
- with no response. I have been trying to get help for over a week.
- Attached is an updated description of my problem, and all the info I
- can think of that might be relevant. If I cannot get help, I am going
- to return the modem to my vendor, who allows returns for 30 days.
-
- Please call me at work today 816-926-2371.

- --------------------------------------
-
- My Sportster VI 28.8 with personal voice mail send faxes very well,
- but, using the software it was shipped with (Quick Link), it will not
- receive faxes, and the fax on demand feature does not work.Could you
- help me?
-
- My fax-demand problems are as follows:
-
- When I call the modem from a fax machine telephone, and select the
- Fax on Demand box, I get the appropriate fax-on-demand prompts before
- and after selecting the fax to send. However, I never get the 'beep'
- that FDREADY tells me to wait for. Some info that might be relevant:
-
- 1. After I get the msg telling me to wait for a beep, QuickLink
- opens
- the "Call Manager - Sending" screen. The information it
- shows:
-
- Status: dialing
- Fax number : Fax on demand
- Fax number: on line
-
- 2. After one minute, the "Call Manager - Sending" status line
- changes
- to no carrier.
-
- 3. According to the send log, I am getting a 304 error, no
- carrier
- detected after dial.
-
- 4. I am using a US Robotics Sportster VI 28.8 Faxmodem, with
- which
- QuickLink Message Center was shipped. It works fine as a
-
- data modem, Windows terminal recognizes it,and it's set
- up normally on COM2/IRQ3. The output of I7 and the string
-
- that returns the DSP date is:
-
-
- DSP date 10/12/95
- Supervisor rev 6.1.5
- DSP rev 1.2.5
-
- OK
- ati7

- Product type US/Canada External

- Clock Freq 20.16Mhz
- Eprom 256k
- Ram 32k
- Supervisor date 10/13/95
- DSP date 10/12/95
- Supervisor rev 6.1.5
- DSP rev 1.2.5
- OK
-
-
- 5. Serial and other numbers off the modem:
-
- CJE - 0295
- 0002790044776720
-
- 6. Quick Link's comtest finds the modem before I load Call
- Manager,
- but cannot find it *after* I load call manager.
-
- 7. I tried both the default init string that QuickLink uses for
- "U.S.
- Robotics Voice Mail", and the init string you list in
- your text file for QL II for Windows :
- (AT&F&B1&H1&R2&A3&K3X4S0=0S7=90S36=0). Neither one
- works.
-
- 8. I ran Modem Doctor 6.0 and some other tests against the
- odem..and found some anomolies:
-
- a. Modem Doctor: DSR did not follow DTR drop
- CTS did not follow RTS drop
-
- b. Modem Doctor: It got many "carrier answer" errors
-
- c. Modem Doctor: could find no Modem ID Type
-
- d. Another utility: Could find no DCE Model Information, DCE
- manufacturer, or DCE revision number.
-
- 9. Another (related or unrelated problem): Quicklink seems
- unaware
- when a caller (at least once in the faxback box) has
- hung up..it just keeps playing the outgoing messages.
-
- 10. The output of the I4 command is:
-
- USRobotics Sportster Vi 33600 Faxmodem Settings...
